PALMY EXPLORERS

Palmy Explorers is for gifted kids and their families to dive deep into life.
Palmy Explorers Interactive Session – Russell Street School Hall
Commencing Saturday 8 April, thereafter the first Saturday of the month 2.30 to 4pm for the rest of this year

Palmy Explorers is a group that has grown out of the closure of One Day School here in Palmerston North where children got to be with other likeminded kids just like them for one day a week.  This is our first session in a dedicated space that we hope will be the first of many sessions where kids are encouraged to be creative, and be inspired by being around other likeminded children who think and act like them that they may not have in their regular class at school.

The first session includes:

  • Come and take things apart – bring any electronics that you have and are happy to share, and screwdrivers and tools that can help children with this activity.
  • Use the Imaginz set to create
  • Make paper planes – bring some paper with you
  • Have your children be inspired by being around other creative, quirky kids who think and act like them.

$2 donation per child, limited to 30 children. Parents or caregiver to accompany child for the duration.

To find the hall park on the road, walk up the drive, hall to the left of the steep stairs near Willard Home.
Join the Facebook Group “Palmy Explorers” and indicate that you are coming along

Future topics and ideas will be discussed at these events so this is your chance to come on down and see what is happening.  From time to time we hope to bring in others to chat with the children and inspire them to help change the world they live in!

Our first event is...

Be a Museum Consultant for Te Manawa

Neil is an amazing crazy cool guy who works at Te Manawa. He writes:
"Firstly we wish to congratulate you on the formation of the Palmy Explorers group and are very excited that you have chosen to visit us on your inaugural outing.
Te Manawa’s vision is to be a ‘museum without walls’ in which it becomes a space that is even more relevant, educational and inspiring for all areas of our community. Towards this end we wish to invite you to visit us in the capacity of Museum Consultants where you can review the museum, its spaces, exhibits etc and let us know all of your thoughts and ideas about how we can continue to improve the museum.
On your visit we invite you to assess the following:
  1. Our Water Room – We are looking to improve upon the ways in which it can be used.
  2. The Back of House – Our ‘out the back spaces’ are a little dull. We would appreciate your thoughts on ways we can lift the energy of these spaces.
  3. The Courtyard Play Boxes – These are in need of a full rethinking, can you help?
Also we would love to know your thoughts on:
  1. The ‘Balls, Bullets and Boots’ exhibition.
  2. The National Geographic Top 50 photos exhibition.
  3. The Farewell Zealandia exhibition.
We will finish up by hearing your ideas in a brainstorming session where, with those interested, we may look to collaborate with you on the implantation of some your top ideas.
We look forward to meeting with you all.

Sat 26 September2-4pm

Also coming up is:
  • Behind the Scenes at the Library. See how the book sorting machine works. Look at some of the technology used for information storage (eg microfilm). Discover what was happening 100 years ago on the day you were born. (mid October? to be confirmed)
  • Social Get Together at Memorial Park29 November 11am-2pm. Bring your own food and maybe something yummy to share. Bring sporting equipment. The paddling pool should be full. There is a skating rink and children's playground, with tons of room to run around. We will have unicycles available to try.
  • Quarry Engineering: (late January) Mike from Aggretech designs quarries, consults on safety and is a pretty interesting guy to talk to. We hope he can take us somewhere local and explain how it all works.
We'd love to have your ideas for what to do after that. Come to Te Manawa and put your thoughts into the mix.

We hope Palmy Explorers will be a great place to laugh and learn and live at full speed. Remember to sign up (see above) so we can keep you up to date. See you at Te Manawa...
